Set up a print product, from blank to order-ready
Build a custom banner step by step. Set its dimensions, price, finishing choices, images, and artwork workflow—then check the customer form and proof.
Admin → Products → Create product, then open the product’s settings.
Before you begin
- Use a new product you can keep inactive while setting it up, and an account allowed to manage catalog products.
- Have your real size limits, selling prices, shipping requirements, and an example artwork file ready.
- The guide uses fictional demo data. Its screenshots come from actual admin and storefront components; no customer information is shown.
01Create an inactive product
Start in Products. A new product is deliberately inactive so you can finish its settings before customers can buy it.
- Select Create product. Enter Custom vinyl banner as the name and custom-vinyl-banner as the URL path.
- Choose Dimension-based physical product. This is the type that supports customer artwork and width/height entry. A weight-based product is for goods sold without this print-size workflow; Service is for nonphysical work.
- Enter 30 as the Initial unit price and check Requires customer artwork. Select Create inactive product. We will replace the initial per-item price with a square-foot rate in Pricing.
Check the resultThe product opens in its settings with an inactive status. It is saved, but it is not ready to be offered to customers yet.
02Name, organize, and describe it
In Product information, give the item a name shoppers understand, a short subtitle, and a category. The short subtitle and the long product description are different fields.
- Keep Product name as Custom vinyl banner and leave Use as page H1 enabled for this example.
- Under Subtitle, enter “13 oz vinyl banners for indoor displays and outdoor events.” Leave advanced subtitle layout off for a simple line of text.
- Under Categories, select your Banners category. Add banner and events as search tags. Leave Exclude from search off, then select Save presentation.
| Control | What it does | In this example |
|---|---|---|
| Featured product | Makes the product eligible for the featured-product listing. The storefront theme determines where that listing appears. | Off |
| Exclude from search | Hides the product from storefront search results. This does not replace activating or deactivating the product. | Off |
| Categories | Places the product in catalog categories. A category can also have its own featured selection. | Banners |
| Search tags | Adds terms used to find this product in storefront search. | banner, events |
Check the resultReopen Product information. The saved subtitle, tags, and category are still present.
03Choose the artwork workflow
Open Artwork and storefront controls. For a custom banner, each customer supplies a design. Leave supplied artwork off in Media and print artwork; a gallery example is not the customer’s production file.
- Enable Require customer artwork. Set Printed sides to Front only; the default selection becomes Front only.
- Enable Size, Quantity, Product options, and Create design under Purchase form fields. Keep Material / product label on. Additional options can stay off because this example has no add-on groups.
- Leave Designer patterns off. Those are calibration/print patterns, not the normal customer design-template library.
- Select Save controls. If you want customers to design online, also enable the online designer in the store-wide Storefront Controls settings.
| Control | What it does | In this example |
|---|---|---|
| Require customer artwork | Uses customer uploads or saved designs to create the print artwork. Available for dimension-based physical products. | On |
| Printed sides | Determines whether the product supports a front only or a front and back. | Front only |
| Default selection | Sets the starting side selection when both sides are available. It cannot exceed the sides you offer. | Front only |
| Designer patterns / Patterns only | Offers calibration and print patterns, or restricts the designer to those tools. | Both off |
Check the resultThe Customer choices summary lists size, quantity, product options, and Create design, with front selected by default.
04Set the available sizes
Open Dimensions and printed sides. This panel sets the size choices and limits; the artwork panel controls which printed sides are offered. Enter dimensions in inches.
- Choose Variable for Sizing type so customers can type a width and height.
- Set width to a minimum of 12, maximum of 120, and default of 36. Set height to a minimum of 12, maximum of 60, and default of 24.
- Leave Length / depth at 0 for this flat example. Use the real depth and shipping setup for products where depth affects fulfillment.
- Select Save sizing. Keep each default within the minimum and maximum you entered.
| Control | What it does | In this example |
|---|---|---|
| Variable | Lets a customer enter a width and height within your limits. | Width 12–120; height 12–60 in |
| Fixed | Offers named sizes instead of free dimension entry. Each row needs a label, width, height, and depth. | Not used here |
| Storefront size label | For fixed sizes: show dimensions, the saved label, or both. Changing the label format does not change the physical dimensions. | Available when Fixed is selected |
Check the resultThe saved default is 36 × 24 inches. On the customer form, width and height begin with these numbers.
05Set a price you can check
Open Pricing. This example uses a constant $5 per square foot, with no base charge, area discount, quantity discount, or customer-specific override. These are demonstration prices; use prices appropriate to your business.
A 36 × 24-inch banner is 864 square inches, or 6 square feet. At $5 per square foot, one front-only banner is $30 before options, shipping, and tax.
- Choose Square-foot pricing under Pricing method. Confirm the replacement of the initial price structure, then enter all the new values before saving.
- In the first price row, set Price to 5, Minimum price to 5, and Backside % to 0. Keeping both rates equal makes the example a constant rate. If you use wholesale pricing, reveal its values and set its Price and Minimum price to 4 and its Backside % to 0 for this demonstration.
- Keep the square-foot discount range at 0 and the Retail base price at 0. Leave Quantity discounts empty.
- Select Save pricing. Reopen it and confirm the saved rate is $5/sq ft.
| Control | What it does | In this example |
|---|---|---|
| Price | The starting rate. Its unit depends on the pricing method. | 5 per sq ft |
| Minimum price | The floor for the square-foot rate as an area discount applies. It is not a minimum order total. | 5 per sq ft |
| Backside % | The additional backside percentage used by products that offer backside pricing. The field can appear even while this example is front only. | 0; front only |
| Show wholesale values | Reveals wholesale rates alongside retail rates. Check these separately if you use wholesale pricing. | Optional; example wholesale rate 4 |
Check the resultOne 36 × 24-inch banner without grommets has an expected product subtotal of $30.
06Add a finishing choice
Open Product options. Options are customer choices such as grommets or lamination. Shared product options holds the reusable groups and value names; the product editor chooses which values are offered and what they cost on this product.
- If Grommets is not in your option library, open Shared product options and create that group with None and Four corners as its values. Return to the product.
- Select Add option from library, choose Grommets, and expand the group. Leave This product offers options such as size, color or finishing enabled.
- Check Required, include both values, and set None as the default. A required group can still offer a None value so the customer explicitly chooses no grommets.
- Set None to 0 and Four corners to 4 in Retail. Set the Charge basis for both to Per unit. If you use wholesale pricing, enter its prices separately; the screenshot uses 0 and 3.
- Keep Additional option off. Select Save options and variants, review the confirmation, and save.
| Control | What it does | In this example |
|---|---|---|
| Include | Makes an individual value available for this product. Unchecked values remain in the library but are not offered here. | Both values checked |
| Default | Sets the initial value in this group. Selecting one default clears another default in the same group. | None |
| Required | Keeps this option group part of the customer’s selection. | On |
| Additional option | Places the group among add-on options; the matching purchase-form control must also be visible. | Off |
| Charge basis | Flat charges once for the line; Per unit scales with quantity; Per sq ft scales with area; Percent uses percentage pricing. | Per unit |
Check the resultAt quantity 1, changing Grommets from None to Four corners increases the example subtotal from $30 to $34. At quantity 2, that option adds $8.
07Add a useful product image
Open Media and print artwork. Product gallery images help customers understand what they are buying. Supplied print artwork is a separate production setting for products that come with a ready-to-print file.
- Upload a gallery image or select Choose existing images. Use a clear example of the finished product; this guide uses fictional Cedar & Coffee artwork.
- Keep the image Active. Choose Fit complete image when the entire design needs to be visible; Fill and crop may cut off its edges.
- Write descriptive Alternative text. Use the reorder controls if there are several gallery images.
- Leave Use supplied artwork for this product unchecked because customers will provide their own files. Select Save media after adding or editing the image.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Show in | Assigns the image to a storefront use offered by your setup, or keeps it in the gallery. Each named use can only be assigned once. |
| Image sizing | Fits the complete image, fills and crops, uses full width, or stretches. Check the result before choosing a crop or stretch. |
| Alternative text | Describes the image for people who cannot see it. Describe the subject rather than repeating a file name. |
| Slider and featured captions | Optional titles and subtitles for storefront areas that use those images. |
Check the resultThe image remains attached after reloading. The storefront shows the complete banner design with no unwanted crop.
08Explain the product on its page
Open Description and search appearance. Give customers enough information to choose a size, finishing, and artwork workflow. Product information holds the short subtitle; this section holds the longer description, search text, FAQs, and video.
- Keep Product URL path as custom-vinyl-banner. Enter Custom Vinyl Banners | Demo Print Co. as the example SEO title.
- Write a Search description that describes the actual offer: a custom 13 oz banner, size and grommet choices, and artwork upload/proof review.
- In Long description, explain materials, size limits, intended use, artwork requirements, and what happens after upload. Do not promise a turnaround you have not configured.
- Add an FAQ answering “How do I hang my banner?” Explain when to choose Four corners versus None. Select Save content.
| Control | What it does | In this example |
|---|---|---|
| Product URL path | The product’s page path. Use a short, readable path and check existing links before changing an established URL. | custom-vinyl-banner |
| SEO title / Search description | The page’s search text. These fields do not replace the visible product description. | — |
| Canonical URL | Identifies an intended primary URL when your setup needs one. Leave it alone unless you have a specific canonical plan. | — |
| Page video | Optional HTTPS video or supported iframe plus its title, description, and thumbnail. | — |
| FAQs | Product-specific questions and answers; arrow buttons change their display order. | — |
Check the resultReopen the section to confirm the saved text. Check the product page itself to ensure its visible description and FAQs answer the customer’s questions.
09Review fulfillment and activate
Before activation, review the settings that affect whether this product can be delivered and produced. This example’s screen captures focus on selling the banner; shipping, inventory, and production rules must match your own operation.
- Open Shipping and check weight, packaging, pickup, and any freight settings that apply to this product.
- Open Inventory if this item tracks a material or SKU. Confirm available stock and whether out-of-stock sales are allowed. Avoid enabling stock tracking with an unrelated SKU.
- Confirm the production workflow and turnaround that apply to the product. The values must describe what your team can fulfill.
- Save each section. When the configuration is ready for customers, choose Product actions → Change status → Activate. Return to Products and use the product’s Preview link to open it on the storefront.
Check the resultThe product is active, its customer URL opens, and its category, image, product information, and purchase controls are present.
10Check the customer experience
Use the storefront with the same values as the example. This connects the admin settings to what the customer sees.
The screenshot shows the actual Next.js storefront configurator with fictional product data and example quotes. Your theme can arrange the product differently. Shipping and tax are added at checkout.
- Start with 36 inches wide, 24 inches high, quantity 1, and Grommets set to None. Confirm the example product subtotal is $30.
- Choose Four corners. Confirm the example subtotal is $34.
- Change quantity to 2. With the same size and finishing, the example subtotal is $68. Return to quantity 1 for the artwork check.
- Change a dimension and check that the displayed quote refreshes. Try a value outside the configured range; the form should ask for a valid size before providing an orderable quote.
- Open Design Options if enabled, or continue to the artwork step. Confirm that the selected size, quantity, and finishing travel with the order.
| Control | What it does | In this example |
|---|---|---|
| 36 × 24 in · None · Qty 1 | 6 sq ft × $5 | $30 |
| 36 × 24 in · Four corners · Qty 1 | $30 print + $4 finishing | $34 |
| 36 × 24 in · Four corners · Qty 2 | 2 × ($30 + $4) | $68 |
Check the resultSize, finishing, and quantity changes produce the expected quote, and the artwork step uses those selections.
11Upload and review the actual proof
A product image, an uploaded file, and an approved proof serve different purposes. The proof shows how the order artwork sits within the selected print size. Review the design itself before approving it.
- On an example order, upload the customer’s print file or use a saved design. Open its artwork proof after the preview has loaded.
- Confirm the correct side, 36 × 24-inch print size, and quantity 1. Inspect the actual artwork, not just the file name.
- Use Fit to show the whole design within the print area. Fill / crop fills the area and can remove content at the edges. Stretch changes proportions; avoid it when the design should retain its shape.
- Use the trim guides and zoom to check text and edges. If you change placement, select Save placement. If the design itself needs editing, use Edit in designer when available.
- Only select Approve front once the artwork and placement are correct. For products with a back, review and approve that side too.
Check the resultThe proof contains the correct artwork at the intended proportions. Placement changes are saved, and approval is given only after review.
You’re ready when…
You can find the product, select the expected size and finishing, see the correct price, reach the artwork step, and review a visible proof. Shipping, stock, production, and turnaround settings are ready for real orders.
Common questions
I cannot edit sizes or require artwork.
Check the product type, supplied-artwork setting, and whether it is imported. Dimension-based products can require customer artwork. Imported products can have vendor-controlled size and artwork settings.
My option is saved but missing from the customer form.
Check that the group is attached, the value is included, and Product options is enabled in Artwork and storefront controls. For an Additional option group, enable Additional options too. Then check any conflicting-option exclusions.
The displayed price does not match this example.
Check the size unit, quantity, printed sides, finishing charge basis, retail/wholesale context, base charge, discounts, and customer pricing rules. The $30/$34/$68 checks assume the exact demonstration configuration above.
The designer does not appear.
Create design must be enabled for the product and the online designer must also be enabled under the store-wide Storefront Controls. A per-value artwork setting can affect designer availability as well.
The product is active but I cannot find it in search.
Check Exclude from search, category placement, and the saved product URL. Active status and search visibility are separate controls.
A save fails or says the product changed.
Keep the error visible and review the saved section before trying again. Reloading can discard the current draft. Another user’s changes, a removed library value, or a vendor update can require you to refresh first.
